About Corals
Coral is an ancient gemstone, and has been used for thousands of years. Aside from the lovely solid colors found in Coral, it can also have color zones or swirls, with white, pink, orange, and red being the most prevalent.Unlike all other gemstones, coral is an organic gemstone i.e. it is derived from the remains of living corals. While most species of corals discolor after they die, a particular species called corallium rubrum (or several related species of marine coral) retain their red color. These are then used as gemstones and contain numerous swirls and patterns.
In general, the darker the color of red, the more valuable the coral is. An exception to this is the coral from Japan which are prized for their orange color. Corals are generally found in Italy, Japan and Taiwan. Coral jewellery has been found in ancient Egyptian and prehistoric European burials, and continues to be made to the present day. It was especially popular during the Victorian age.
